We're just sheep in the shadows.....

"The Lord is my Shephard....

Have you ever read or recited this scripture and tried to mean it?
If you have, then guess what that would make you?
That's right, a sheep. One of the most insecure and herd mentality driven mammals on this planet! Oh, and not very bright at all!
A mammal that was created to be led and cared for.
Yep, we're sheep, alright. Our creator refers to us as "sheep" a few times in His Word...

Did you know that sheep have rectangular pupils?
With their eyes on the side of their head, they have almost 360 degree of vision to help detect any potential danger. But it also makes them extremely skittish because when they catch a glimpse of something that they don't immediately recognize, they tend to immediately freak out. A branch unexpectedly moving, a falling rock, a tumbleweed, another sheep....
Sort of like us.
The only thing that successfully puts them at ease is a shepherd that that they can run to.

The Lord speaks of the times when we go through the valley of the SHADOW of death.
Not death itself, just the appearance that it is near by or could be a possibility.
This is a particularly anxious time for sheep because the shadows vastly distort their/our vision of what is REALLY out there.
The sheep that were oh so content and happy just the day before suddenly is a continual nervous wreck!!
We, as people, also let our imaginations run wild and disrupt our lives when we assume that the shadows, (aka possibilities) are going to do us a degree of harm.
But get this!

The Good Shepherd is still right there with them/us.

His rod of protection in one hand and His staff of guidance in the other.
IF, and this is a big IF, the sheep stays close by the Shepherd's side and doesn't wig out and run away from the sound of His voice, guess what?
They WILL make it safely through that place and wind up at a peaceful, nourishing destination. A place that can only be accessed by first going through that scary dark place.
The new sheep, the ones that have never been this route before, don't know this. And most sheep that have traveled this route before, don't remember what's at the end of this experience.
Sound familiar?
I know that God showed us in the Old Testament that building alters along our routes help to remind us of His faithfulness. To remind us that He got us through whatever it was. As humans, we have things such as journaling or photographs/videos to remind us of past victories.
If we are in good fellowship, there more than likely will be others around us that have made this particular type of journey before and can share their experiences of how faithful The Shepherd was to them. And will be to you! Our Christian parents/grandparents are a wealth of knowledge in this field. They've been there, done that. Probably a few times.
I believe that this fact, in part, is why we, and sheep, have have a built-in herd mentality, so that we can draw on the experiences of those around us.
So, it's okay to be a sheep, because we are His sheep, the sheep of His pasture!
