Survive or thrive?

 

I overheard a person working at the grocery store telling one of her fellow employee that she prays everyday "Lord help me get through this day". 

Why is she praying to simply survive? 

If you're going to ask God Almighty to do something for you that He probably will do, shouldn't you make the request something great instead of something just "okay"?

I know that I fall into this lie/trap too often.

I would be coming from an attitude of remembering my fallen state or the sin I blatantly committed a while back and base my request upon my worthiness instead of God’s eternal, ever-present Love.

My very first pastor, in my new life, labeled it “Staring at your navel”.

If you are staring at yourself, your circumstances, your recent path, you will find it impossible to also “fix your gaze upon the Lord…”, unless you're Marty Feldman, and “You keep them in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you,….”

Shouldn't that lady instead be praying "Lord help me find joy throughout the day"?  Or something even gutsier? Shouldn't we all???

This doesn’t come naturally to most of us. It takes trust, reminders and practice to make big requests from God. But, He invites us to!!

2 Cor. 9:8 paints a pretty clear picture of God’s heart in this matter…

"And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."

It's in our nature to steer in the direction that we are looking. Try walking a straight line while looking over your right shoulder. You inevitably will wander to the right.

I remember the first time as a teenager driving loaded. I came up on a stop sign and I stared at it as I approached it and I stared at it and I stared at it and I almost drove right over it, because that is what I was focused on. (Thank you Lord that you have mercy even on fools)

Pray your prayer, place your request at His feet, then keep your eyes expectantly open for bursts of Joy, Happiness and Peace. But pray assuming God's positive intentions! They will be there!!

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Phil 4:6

Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.  John 16:24

You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.  Psalms 16:11

I am overcome with joy because of your unfailing love, for you has seen my troubles, and you care deeply about the anguish of my soul. Psalm 31:7

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him...  Romans 15:13a

We're just sheep in the shadows.....

  "The Lord is my Shephard....   Have you ever read or recited this scripture and tried to mean it? If you have, then guess what that would make you?  That's right, a sheep. One of the most insecure and herd mentality driven mammals on this planet! Oh, and not very bright at all!  A mammal that was created to be led and cared for. Yep, we're sheep, alright. Our creator refers to us as "sheep" a few times in His Word... Did you know that sheep have rectangular pupils?  With their eyes on the side of their head, they have almost 360 degree of vision to help detect any potential danger. But it also makes them extremely skittish because when they catch a glimpse of something that they don't immediately recognize, they tend to immediately freak out. A branch unexpectedly moving, a falling rock, a tumbleweed, another sheep.... Sort of like us. TAKE UP WHAT CROSS??

  What Jesus was really saying in Luke 9:23 There is so much misunderstanding, fallacy, and false teaching of this scripture;    "You must deny yourself, take up your cross daily and follow me."  When Jesus was telling this to the disciples, He had not gone to the Cross yet, neither had he been physically carrying one around.  So, since He ALWAYS leads by example, what was He carrying around Daily?  His purpose. And His purpose was to be The Messiah on the cross. Yes, the physical cross was in his path, but that was ONE day out of his 33 years of living, and after that one day, he was done with the material of the cross! He lives even today, still fulfilling His purpose.   This is the same thing that he wants from us.  As we willingly and purposely walk with him in discipleship, we learn more and more of what our individual calling is as He guides our hearts (to will and to do).
